In this padlet you will learn about what the circulatory systen is as well as its various components, the functions of the circulatory system, possible diseases/disorders of this system, and possible diagnostic test + surgical intervention for coronary artery disease. At the end of this padlet is a mini medical terminology quiz on the circulatory system consisting of three questions.

The major components of the circulatory system include the cardiovascular system (blood vessels, the heart, and blood), and the lymphatic system (lymph, lymph vessels, and lymph nodes). The three types of blood vessels include arteries (carry blood away from the heart), veins (return blood to the heart), and capillaries (connecting the arteries and veins). The heart is responsible for the circulation of blood through blood vessels to the rest of the body. Blood (composed of WBC's, RBC's, platelets, and plasma) is responsible for carrying carbon to the lungs and delivering oxygen to cells. The lymphatic system and its various structures help assist the circulatory system through the drainage of proteins/excess fluids from the tissues and moving it back into the bloodstream.

The main purpose of the circulatory system is the transportation of oxygen/nutrients/hormones to the cells and tissues of the body. This system is also responsible for the removal of waste products from the body such as carbon dioxide. The circulatory system works together with other body systems in order to maintain the body's proper homeostasis through supplying this blood/oxygen to all cells in the body.

CAD (Coronary Artery Disease) : Coronary artery disease can occur when an abnormal amount of cholesterol deposits (also called plaque) into the arteries of the heart (coronary arteries). If the plaque continues to build up over a long period of time, the arteries of the heart can narrow resulting in the inability of the heart to receive an adequate amount of oxygen-rich blood. This process may also be known as atherosclerosis.

Diagnostic Test for CAD : One type of diagnostic test that may be performed when testing for coronary artery disease includes a blood test. A medical provider can then examine the individuals levels of triglycerides, cholesterol, sugar, lipoproteins, and proteins that may be a sign and increase risk of CAD.

Surgical/therapeutic Intervention for CAD : One type of surgical intervention for managing CAD includes an angioplasty. This procedure is used in order to reopen blocked coronary arteries and ultimately restore blood flow to the heart. During this procedure, a catheter is placed into a blood vessel and guided towards a blocked artery where a small balloon is inflated where narrowing has occurred, resulting in more space for blood flow.
