My top recommendation is to take the time to get to know your classmates.

Why? They will be a source of support for you throughout your first year. Through your connections you will come to see that when you have questions or are struggling they often are too. You're not alone and it can be really reassuring to know this! But they're an important part of your support network, and together you can support and cheer one another on to overcome any challenges you face.

CD

My top recommendation for an incoming child and youth student is to seek out a counsellor at the beginning of the semester. It’s a great way to start talking about anything that’s going on in your life and setting up goals for yourself and healthy habits. If you don’t end up signing up for an appointment right away and are going through a struggle or need to speak to someone, the counselling resource the College offers is a great free no-cost for you to benefit from!

JB

I would tell incoming students to take a deep breath when school starts to feel overwhelming and give yourself a break to reset. Knowing your personal limits will help you be successful, and it's OK to ask for help.

Use all the time management tools that your teachers provide to your advantage. Set goals and make semester plans; they will be your best friend! The best way to keep stress and anxiety levels down is to know what you have due and give yourself loads of time to complete it. There are so many resources to help us be successful; use them to your advantage!

KM

As a first year student the first thing I would recommend is to ensure you are present for class as much as possible. Connecting with professors verbally and also seeing what they are presenting and participating is a good way to maximize your learning.
The second thing I would recommend is to find a peer you connect well with. The support of a friend going through the same classes and workload as you is really helpful. This can be done with a peer mentor or with a peer from class. For me this has helped make my first semester much easier.

NM

Another point to be made is that they should seek out for help from peers and teacher when needed and never feel hesitation to ask any questions which in turn help them to reduce their stress and anxiety. Making appointments with professors is a great way to telling your curriculum problems to broader their knowledge.

HK

My top recommendation after my first year is mange your time properly. I think that this is very important because with our daily life's things get to be a lot for many people. And if you do not set time a side for things like homework, reading, and self care, maintaining a balanced life is key especially if your working or have a family. It is important to stay on track and making a schedule to fit everything in helps to make sure you stay on track.
CNA

Its been really hard for me to keep up with my studies and part-time job initially. Moving out from my home country was a big step for me. But now with all the support, I get, as friends as well as teachers im doing pretty good. So no matter things get hard, It's going to be okay. Your mental health is more important than everything else.
Jeen Simon

As a first year student in the child and youth care program, I would recommend that new students to the program prepare by creating a semester planner for all their classes.
I had no idea how much this actually helped me stay on track with all my assignments, tests, and quizzes. It was easy to set up, i was also able to arrange my classes by day also color; which helped me so much when looking for a specific assignment. Having a semester planner allowed me not only to stay on track with my tasks but also allowed me to set goals for myself and also allow personal time for my children which in return was the best reward! The most important thing to remember is "Have Fun", speak up; and be a ChangeMaker!
TA

As a first-year student in CYC, my main advice is that you take the time to understand what your goals are for this semester and then try to write them down in a semester planner, which you can readily access on our college website. If you know your classmates, it will be extremely beneficial to you because you will have someone to rely on if you ever miss a class, and trust me, having classmates has greatly aided me. However, if you do not know any of your classmates, you will have peer mentors who can assist and guide you in any of your problems. You simply need to schedule an appointment with them, and finally, I would advise you not to stress out because, while it may seem overwhelming at times, you will finish your work on time. Simply plan ahead of time and, if it helps, create "TO-DO LISTS," which has so far been effective in keeping me on track.

BG

As a child and youth care, you should have the enthusiasm to learn and earn aspects of mental health. If we gain knowledge with passion and curiosity it is understandable to study. And do plan the time management, this will enable us to submit our assignment on time.
