Their Environment

"Young people have grown up in a fragmented media environment, in which hundreds of TV channels and millions of internet sites have provided them with a rich and varied socialization experience but has also enabled them to easily avoid political events" (7). This supports my claim that young Americans are less informed about politics because their is no way to force them to watch it. Media is one of the main things this generation uses and if somehow politics could be incorporated in a way appealing to young Americans than they would probably get way more involved.

No Knowledge

When a survey was taken on how many questions a person could get right about politics "in 2008 young people were correct 20 percent of the time whereas people over 65 we're correct more than twice as often" (4). This shows that barley any young American had any knowledge about their government and the politics around them. It also shows that the elderly people had much more knowledge on this subject compared to the young people because they actually take the time to get involved and informed on what's happening in their country.

Current State of Youth Political Involvement

In the US today, political involvement for the majority of young Americans is non-existent. Back in the day, people of all age groups who were eligible to vote were very involved in politics. Whether it being a 50 year old man or a 24 year old girl, everyone was mostly informed on the current events and had their own political views. In today's society, younger Americans are becoming less and less involved and informed with politics. They are less informed about politics due to their lack of interest about them. Since their are not many ways for young Americans to watch politics on TV or read them on the internet without the various distractions of different channels and other websites on both of those devices, they are not informed about the political events occurring around them. They think that they don't need to get involved and they can just leave it to the older people and the professionals to make all the decisions. But, what they don't realize is that without their participation, they will not be informed on any new policies and programs and the future leaders of their generation will not have the knowledge needed to run this country.
