When I started this book, it took me a while to get "into" it. As I read on, I felt like a lot of the story was repetitive. The main character, Melody, suffers from cerebral palsy and has a photographic memory. The author does a great job showing the challenges and frustrations with Melody, and the book also teaches us how others often view someone with a disability. It definitely teaches us lessons on how we should accept others for their differences and not always "assume" things.

I loved this book! Written in free verse, the main character, Mimi, is judged because she is half Japanese and half African American. She also is frowned upon by a certain teachers because she is a girl wanting to be in a boy class. Read on to see what friendship and determination gets you.

I laughed out loud many times during this book. I loved the main character, Beans, and his humor throughout the story. The story takes place during the Great Depression, and it shows the struggles of Key West. I liked the book, because it taught about hard times of making money during this time, yet I learned a lot on how Key West was created to become a tourist area.
Side note: I love Key West, so it was fun visualizing, and I never knew how it became so bright and cute! :)

Wonder is a must read, so after getting to know the characters and having my own thoughts about each of them, it was good to read more deeply into the perspectives of three of the characters. My thoughts about them, especially Julian, changed after knowing their "stories". If you are a Wonder fan, I recommend reading this as well.

This story reminded me a lot of the story of Harriet Tubman. It teaches a lot about the struggles during slavert, and it is set during the Civil War. The main character is a determined young slave who longs to be free with her family. Does she ever live this dream, or does she stay in the nightmare she's living? Read on to find out!

I read this book, because many of my students said it was an absolute must read. I have to admit that everyone has their own taste, 😊 because I was not fond of this book at all. It is a combination of several poems, with the main character being a boy named Jack who did not like to write poetry but then starts to, includes his dog who died, and he later has a visitor to his school. I couldn't really get into the book, and I didn't like the different poems, but you may! :)

This book is a must read if you like feel good books, great graphics, and humor. Cece is a little girl who struggles being the new kid at school. She also is deaf and is embarrassed by her "Phonic Ear" and has a rough time with friendship. While many times throughout the book you feel sad and very sorry for her, other times you will laugh out loud. Does she find true friendship even with her differences? Highly recommended to read to find out!

Smile is a great graphic novel for fifth and sixth graders to read. It is pretty funny throughout the book, and it shows the main character, Raina, going through normal difficulties. On top of those problems, Raina knocks out her front teeth. I laughed pretty hard at some parts, because I could relate to her from when I was younger (as I had teeth issues) :) While I first laughed half of the book, I thought there could be more of a story line and got tired of it being mostly about her teeth, more than about her childhood/school encounters. However, I still recommend it!

While I have started to really like graphic novels, I thought that this book was a cute one, but it wasn't realistic. I'm also not sure it's easy to understand for some students. The whole part of it bringing in ghosts may be scary to some kids, while most characters were cute. I also feel the author needs to better explain cystic fibrosis, because I've had many students ask what this is. Many students have loved this book, and that is why I chose to read it, but I may just like more realistic ones. 😊

Well I wanted a change, got some suggestions, and decided to read a sort of mysterious book, Fuzzy Mud. Two friends have a bad encounter with a bully named Chad, and then weird things start to happen. There's some sci-fi in there, but the overall, the story is suspenseful, yet teaches a lesson about bullying as well as friendship. I recommend this book for sure!
