Historic D&H Canal Feeder Lakes need protection!

The man-made lakes that were created to supply water to the D&H Canal are located near Rock Hill, NY. They include Wolf Lake, Wanaksink Lake, Yankee Lake, Lake Louise-Marie, Davis and Masten Lakes. These lakes still supply water into the Neversink River and are surrounded by natural forest. The lakes are all part of interconnected recreational communities. These lakes should be celebrated and protected. Eco-tourism should be promoted. Four distribution centers are being proposed at exit 109 and 107 on Route 17 on either side of the Neversink River. These two sites slope dramatically to the river. Route 17 is being considered as a potential super highway with extra lanes being added and exits being rebuilt to handle more traffic. All of this would be devastating to the D&H Lakes because Route 17 cuts right between them and very closely between Wanaksink and Louise-Marie. The lakes are all part of a system of dams that could become destabilized by blasting.
We are envisioning a D&H Lakes District with protected status. I believe it can become a CEA (Critical Environmental Area) due to it's historic roots and natural beauty. Perhaps the CEA can be combined or adjacent to the Bashakill and the Neversink Unique Area. My organization has begun an effort to create a CEA. I would be very interested in working in concert with the Neversink Watershed Plan. Please reach out to me. Thanks!

Jessica Lansdale
President
Lake Communities Alliance
RHLCA.org

The overdevelopment of the neversink area, including the rock hill area is a travesty. Warehousing and distribution centers do not belong in this area. Our forefathers had their visions in place when they zoned the lands within the Neversink area. This was done to protect our environment and to protect our resources. when some wealthy businessman comes along and thinks that he could change the area to make a few dollars will severely impact the community and the area around it. It was zoned that way many years ago for a reason and that was to maintain a quiet and Qwaint community that we all love.

This includes ensuring that high environmental standards are developed and enforced.
Route 17 cuts very close to several lakes and further development of the highway would impact local communities and nature very negatively.
Communities should focus on developing Eco-Tourism, day hiking etc instead of attracting trucks zooming by on route 17.

Let them go drain the life and safety out another area (preferably on the other side of the Hudson River.)

Significance of Watershed to Sullivan County Settlement

The waterpower provided by the Neversink and nearby rivers was the lifeblood of early settlements in the area. It was used to power water-wheel sawmills, gristmills, cider mills etc. "A mill on every stream' (or more) was very true in the early 1800s. From 1828 - 1898 the Neversink and nearby lakes fed the D&H canal that created a further boom. The waterways made early settlements possible, and they should be revered for history's sake. - Nancy Bachana, Historic Tour Guide with New York-New Jersey Trail Conference
