The food web may begin with a producer (sea grass). This will then be eaten by a small crustacean such as a sand flea or shrimp. A larger crustacean or fish may come and eat these which will finally be eaten by a top predator such as a bird.

Soft bottom dwellers rely on abiotic factors such as sediments and wave action. If a sediment is too rough or course than that organism may not want to burrow into it. Smaller organisms such as clams love to hide out in the clay or silt which is the only thing keeping them safe from predators. Also wind waves will always affect the sandy bottom constantly changing the terrain on the bottom

While there is limited zonation in soft bottom areas because many organisms burrow into the sediment it is seen in small amounts. deposit feeders, for instance, are known to exclude suspension eaters from their general location.

Because of the soft bottom it makes it very difficult for many plants to anchor to the ground. This results in less photosynthesis taking place and therefor requires energy from elsewhere such as phytoplankton drifting from other areas.
