Students should collaborate for many reasons but the most important reason, I believe, is because in the "real" world you have to collaborate with others in all aspects of life and learning how to respond to constructive criticism now will help students realize later in life that growing and changing are part of the learning experience.

I think students will need to first work on class building activities so that they are more comfortable sharing with others. They will also need conversation starters to help guide their conversations. They will need to have guidelines and parameters for discussions, such as timers and job responsibilities.

Teachers need to model what an academic conversation is and how to use academic conversations to effectively collaborate with others. Then students need to practice having academic conversations to ensure that when they do collaborate with others that it is indeed effective collaboration. They need to practice in different scenarios as well so that they can generalize their skills to different subjects. I think that teachers should give all students sentence frames for conversations so that they can start using academic terms such as "I agree with ____ because___" and "I disagree with ____ because____"

I really believe that in order to facilitate the development of collaboration skills teachers need to create an environment of safety to take risks in their school as well as in their classroom. This starts with building relationships. Teachers also need to model collaboration within their team and the school so that students can see it in action.

Here is a link to a video of our students using the Showdown cooperative learning structure from Kagan. There is a "showdown" captain who asks the questions and everyone has to silently and independently respond on a whiteboard. Students use a "thumbs up" signal when they are ready to show their answer. Then they show the captain their answer and he or she responds to their answer.
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B1gFLQKTFZtuRkIycGx3YVpIN2s

Students need to have basic conversation skills. Understanding how to go back and forth and take turns in conversations, is a skill I find many 5th graders are lacking. It can really become apparent when we plan games in the class. They know to take turns, but to carry on just casual conversation, that is appropriate, is hard for some.
