Social Media and the USA 2016 election by Allias Flagg

My topic is on how the Trump vs. Hillary election impacted social media. I will be talking about the chaotic nature of the election and social media at the time as well as how people responded on social media including how the electoral candidates responded to this situation. This is an important election because it is the first USA election in the new world of social media. I will be talking about propaganda, memes, twitter posts, traditional media outlets social media posts and how society responded to these events.

trumps statement on controversial and inappropriate comments made

This is one example of the chaotic nature and outrage that was seen during the 2016 election. There have certainly been scandals in US politics before but i feel that you can argue the scandals and controversy that went on during these times are like nothing ever seen before in a US election campaign. this video was posted by the president elect and future president of the USA directly on to twitter. even with all this trouble Donald trump still managed to win the election.

This slogan is possibly the most iconic part of the 2016 election. people took this slogan and ran with it as they put it on T-shirts, hats, baby clothes, car stickers etc. this became the slogan of not only trumps campaign but for his entire presidency and administration as his followers still use it to this day on twitter, Facebook and Instagram

unlike other president-elect debates that i have seen in the past, it appears that in this debate Hillary Clinton and Donald trump are not only there to answer questions but to attack one another any chance that they get. The dialogue of their debate can be considered unprofessional, personal and relentless. and of course, social media acted accordingly based on this.

this link is to show the difference between the 2012 elections debates vs the 2016 election. you notice right away that in 2012 there was much more respect and even much more professional. although some provoking comments are made in this clip, there are not as many as the 2016 election. every election has its drama but while watching this video you realize its much more tame. people still used social media back then but not as much as now. This clip makes me think that maybe social media impacted the 2016 election just as much as the election impacted social media.

One of the news anchors says " I've been involved with every presidential debate for 30 years and i have never seen anything like this!". This is the most tweeted debate of all time with 6.7 million retweets, 100 million people watching on television and 18.6 million people engaged on Facebook. all eyes were on the united states at this time. people were analyzing every aspect of this election and all of this was taking place on social media.

in October of 2017 women started coming out on twitter to talk about sexual harassment and sexual assault. many celebrities were accused and proven guilty. as it turns out three women came forward to claim that Donald trump sexually harassed them. the allegations were not able to be proven true. trump was also mistaken when he congratulated the women while he didn't know that they were marching against him and his policies. most women did not appreciate Donald trumps infamous "locker room talk" where he made inappropriate comments about women and how he could use his power to control them sexually.

during his election campaign Donald trump stated that he would "bomb the shit out of ISIS" and that he would take their oil. while some people fully stood by Donald's opinion a lot of people took to social media to yet again, showing their frustration and anger. many people thought this was incredibly bold and unprofessional to say. it is statements like this that made Donald trump both wildly unpopular and popular at the same time and it is why he won the election. a lot of people heard him saying things like this and it clearly got his message across. democrats were posting these videos around trying to show people how horrible Donald trump was but i think that their plan back fired because a lot of young unskilled men and blue collar workers were seeing these videos and they absolutely loved him for these statements
