Catherine creates rules for David to help him navigate social situations and avoid behavior that might seem inappropriate or confusing to others. David, who has autism, struggles with understanding social norms, so Catherine writes simple, clear rules like “Keep your pants on in public” or “Say thank you when someone gives you something.”

At first, Catherine feels unsure around Jason because he doesn't speak and uses a communication book. However, as they spend more time together, she begins to understand that communication isn't just about talking—it's about truly connecting. Jason shows her that words can be powerful in any form, and she starts to see him as a thoughtful, funny, and intelligent person. Through their friendship, Catherine questions her ideas of what’s “normal” and learns to value honesty, empathy, and acceptance more deeply.

If I were Catherine, I might have made a different kind of rule for David—one that focuses more on helping him feel confident and respected, rather than just helping him fit in. For example, instead of rules like “Don’t hug people you don’t know,” I might add something like, “It’s okay to be different,” or “You can ask questions if you’re confused.”

This is because many of Catherine’s original rules come from a place of embarrassment or frustration. While she cares deeply about David, her rules often reflect her desire for a “normal” life. But as she grows and matures, she realizes that David’s way of experiencing the world is valid too.

So, a more supportive rule could help David feel accepted while still guiding him through social situations with kindness.

Interviewer:
Catherine, thank you for joining us today. To start, could you tell us what was the hardest part about living with your brother David?

Catherine:
Thank you for inviting me. The hardest part was when David acted differently and people stared at us. I’m used to it because he’s my family, but other people just don’t understand.

Interviewer:
I heard that you made special rules just for David. I’m curious why you did that.

Catherine:
I thought that if David knew the rules, he could feel more comfortable. And honestly, I didn’t want to feel so embarrassed all the time. I believed that if he followed the rules, he would seem more like everyone else.

Interviewer:
But you said your thoughts changed over time. Was there a turning point?

Catherine:
Yes, after I met Jason and became friends with Kristi. Jason is different too, but he lives his life in his own way. Seeing that made me realize that David’s differences are just that—differences, not something wrong.

Interviewer:
So now, how do you feel about being different?

Catherine:
Now I think being different is something special. Like my rule, “A peach is not an odd-looking apple.” Everyone has their own way of being. I feel it’s more important to accept and respect those differences.

Interviewer:
Lastly, is there anything you’d like to say to friends who are trying to accept differences?

Catherine:
It might not be easy at first, but if you try to understand each other, you’ll learn more than you expect. And I want everyone to know that our differences are what make us special.

Reflection

I received help from AI to write in English, but Catherine’s understanding and answers about differences reflect my own thoughts and feelings about diversity in everyday life.

Interviewer: Catherine, can you tell us about your brother David?
Catherine: David is my younger brother with autism. He sees the world differently, so I make rules to help him understand what’s happening and what to expect.

Interviewer: How do you feel about making rules for him?
Catherine: I try to make rules simple and creative. I use drawings or stories to help him feel safe and included.

Interviewer: Did the book change your view of your family?
Catherine: Yes. I learned to accept my family as they are. Being different is okay, and we take care of each other in our own way.

Interviewer: What’s the most important lesson you learned?
Catherine: The most important lesson is to be patient and kind. Everyone is unique and needs support sometimes. Reflection

Some of my interview answers—like saying David is my brother with autism and explaining why I make rules—could have been written by AI, since they’re simple and factual. But when I described using drawings or stories to help David feel included, that’s more personal and creative, which comes from my own ideas.

Title: Interview with Catherine – Learning to Understand Others

Interviewer: Catherine, thank you for taking the time to talk. Why did you make so many rules for David?

Catherine: I felt like his behaviors embarrassed me. I wanted to hide or fix them, so I made rules to control him. I thought rules would help everything feel normal.

Interviewer: What made you change your mind?

Catherine: Meeting Jason helped me reflect. Even though he couldn’t speak, he had his own way of expressing himself. I realized that not everyone needs to be “fixed” — they just need to be understood.

[여기서부터 나의 질문]

Interviewer: How did that affect your relationship with David?

Catherine: I started to see him not as someone who breaks rules, but as someone who communicates differently. I began to accept him for who he is.

Interviewer: What did Rules teach you?

Catherine: It taught me that patience, empathy, and understanding are more important than trying to be perfect.

Reflection

I used AI to help organize my thoughts, but the ideas came from my own reflections. Rules reminded me that children need acceptance, not control.

In Rules, Catherine struggles with wanting a "normal" life while caring for her autistic brother, David. When she meets Jason, a nonverbal boy who communicates with word cards, her understanding of communication and acceptance grows deeply. Inspired by the story, I imagined what Catherine might feel after these events.

She might say, "I used to make rules to control everything, but now I see that real connection comes from understanding, not control." Jason, though he rarely speaks, teaches Catherine what it means to listen with empathy. Through their friendship, Catherine learns that being different isn’t something to fix — it’s something to value.

This story changed how I think about “normal.” It reminded me that differences are part of what makes people special.

reaction: AI helped me organize these thoughts, but reflecting on the characters made the experience personal and meaningful. The book’s message stays with me: kindness, not perfection, is what matters most.
