Claimed that it was an essential part of  "our manifest destiny" this term caught on quickly as a core belief. The term Manifest destiny was popularized.

Between 1845 and 1848 the US would almost double in size -- 1.8 million square miles to 3 million.  Supporters of the Manifest Destiny claimed that "with God's blessing the should rule the heart of North America from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific.' They wanted to not only spread democracy, but Protestant Christianity in place of Catholicism is Mexico or to the Natives. Many wanted extension to the nation's railroads, cheap new lands, and workers thought that expansion would bring more jobs.
Democrats - Supported Manifest Destiny
Whigs - Opposed  - Wanted better developed country rather than larger
Some Americans saw expansion as violence an wrong. 
The Birth of the Texas Republic: 
Tensions had been building between Mexico and Americans living in Texas from 1821, the territory was disputed from the Louisiana purchase. In the Adams-Onis treaty of 1819, Spain ceded Florida to the US, along with Oregon, in exchange for US recognition as the Sabine River to be the border between the US and Spanish Texas. A revolution soon started in Mexico against Spanish rule because most Mexican citizens wanted to be free of European power. It lasted 1810-1821. Stephen F. Austin (an American) was granted land in Texas from Mexico and started an American colony which grew slowly. Mostly Americans went to Texas, few Mexicans and Europeans. In 1830, Mexico closed further American immigration and slavery in Texas and soldiers were placed in Texas to enforce this. Many revolts broke out because of this. In 1832, Mexicans defeated American efforts to take control of army garrison. -Spanish explorers claimed the lands in the 16th century
-europeans settled in the 18th century
-Father Junipero Serra was sent to convert Indians to the Catholic  Christianity, put them under Spanish work, and establish a stronger bond with the Spanish.
-When Serra arrived there were ~300,000 Indians in the area, when the Spanish rule was gone in 1821- only 200,000 Indians remained
-Franciscans kept Christian missions going until 1833 when the Mexican government transferred the ownership of them to the state.
-1840s- different group of immigrants from the US and were interested in making it apart of the US.
-President Polk aware of interests in CA
-George Bancroft (Polk's secretary of Navy) anticipated upcoming war with MX
April 1846- US Warship arrived at Monterey
Manifest Destiny
President Van Buren (after Andrew Jackson) was tied to the Manifest Destiny, but didn't want to deal with TX or OR
-he opposed abolitionists and saw it as an attack on America like nullification

Gag Rule- Gave all citizens the right to "petition the government for a redress of grievances" and abolitionists began to flood the House and Senate with antislavery petitions
      -promise by leaders in congress to ignore abolitionist petitions

John Quincy Adams
saw the GAG RUle as unconstitutional and tried to get over it
used manipulations of the gag rule to change public opinion on slavery

Panic of 1837
major economic downturn brought on by temporary excesses in international trade and the inability of the US to control the currency or make credit available after the closing of the Second Bank of the United States
Jackson issued the Specie Circular in 1836  that made gold and silver the only payment for public land 

William Henry Harrison becomes president but dies a month later and is the 1st pres to die in office.

-John Tyler became pres
September 1841- entire cabinet resigned in protest over the veto of bank bills

Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842 resolved the boundary dispute between the US and Canada and provided for closer cooperation in suppressing the African slave trade
Tyler had 2 goals- annex TX and his own reelection
-April 1844 Tylers new secretary John C. Calhoun presented a treaty to the Senate for the annexation of TX~ rejected treaty
-James K. Polk- "dark horse" in politics

-The Hudson and Canadian Bay Company dominated all the fur business in Oregon. 
-The Oregon territory stretched along the pacific coast
-Tyler and Polk had managed the United States Annexation 
-One week after it was singed the Mexican ambassador declared the move for act of aggression
-Their was a huge fight over which country was going to get Texas 


-Henry David wrote a civil discordance to discuss the issues 
-The war took long and costed lots of money. 
-- The federal government played a role in allowing mexico to be turned over to America 
-The 1848 gold rush gold rush brought a huge influx of immigrants into California and lots of wealth 
-Westward Trails 
Started in St.Louis and went all the way to California

Polk- president
winfield scott- new military general for the US.
The two  armies marched to each other and began to fight in the battle of buena vista.
Polk sent winfield Scott on the largest amphibious attack until D-day invading the Mexican heartland. Mexico was devastated and surrendered. Mexicans took to the bear flag revolt and tried to gain independence in California.
However it was short lived and taken over by the United states.
Gadsend purchase- Mexico ceded 39,000 populated square mile to the US for 10 million which led to the final 48 states of america.
