During the Enlightenment, Americans valued being protected of certain rights that they believed to be reasonable. The Bill of Rights lists amendments which are basic human rights which can stop the government from doing certain things, and protect the people's rights. The Bill of Rights and what Americans valued during the Enlightenment shapes their American Dream because it helps them in being free in certain things like the freedom of speech, religion and press and the right to certain things which can also give them motivation in pushing to their own success and being able to live a better life the way they want to live.

The Puritans of Salem, Massachusetts valued their religion and beliefs deeply. In 1962, the Salem witch trials began, and people believed in the idea of the devil giving power to people to harm others in return for their loyalty. The Puritans valued their health at this time, and God because they believed strongly in him. The Puritans religious aspects and values shaped their American Dream because their American Dream was not only to live a better life in shelter and food like the pilgrims, but escape from the evil things they believed in, and have a calm and peaceful religion. If the Puritans had freedom in their religion, they would have freedom in their life and how they wanted to live, creating a better American Dream for all of them.

The pilgrims risked their lives to come to America to live a new life which they felt was blessed by God, who had brought them to the stable land. The pilgrims sought America to find shelter from winter, food, and to live a functional and healthy life. At first, it was hard for the pilgrims to adjust and find shelter and things they needed to live, but after a while they found shelter that they could stay in to be protected from the harsh weathers. For the pilgrims, their American Dream was to be free on a land that they could easily live on and to be able to build up a life that could make their lives better. The pilgrims wanted to live on land that they could own, and do many things that could create a better life for them, like learning new things, being able to work, and being able to have their shelter and food systems secure. The overall basic idea of the American dream for the pilgrims was to be peaceful and feel as if they are living the life they want to live.
