I’m write to you from in front of the western front. The Battlefield has been a cruel mistress, I’ve lost many comrades. Though I am usually able to tell if the bombs are coming, it is still horrifying, and feels like the bombardments become longer and longer. And the lice, oh lice drives me mad! Even if we win this war, I am not sure if all this war will be worth it. At least now I can enjoy my time off the front and have a smoke with boys before we go plunging back into it. Crew has even been giving us extra tobacco and food from the lack of company. If I can keep my head out of this I promise things will just like they used to be. Hopefully you are on top of finances at home, but I can pitch in later if you are struggling.
