Eventually, they came to America in 1630 with a purpose to practice religious freedom. They called themselves the Puritans because it was used to describe the people who sought to purify the Church of England of all resemblance to the Roman Catholic Church. The Puritans agreed that they would establish a "city on a hill". They believed that their destiny was predetermined by God in terms of who will be saved and who would not, and that reading the Bible was the only way of reaching true salvation. They believed in reforming the Church of England by purifying it strictly by the Bible because they felt that it had become corrupt and unholy. They believed that sex between man and wife was pure, but they were strictly against adultery.
