In 1834, Stephen F. Austin was arrested for treason due to a letter he wrote while petitioning for Texas to become a separate state. He was jailed in Mexico City, where he spent time in solitary confinement. His letters and journals from prison reveal the growing tensions in both Mexico and Texas. When he returned in 1835, Texas was close to starting a war for independence.

Reflection Question: Why do you think the letter Stephen F. Austin wrote was seen as a threat by the Mexican government?

I think the Mexican government saw Stephen F. Austin’s letter as a threat because he was talking about Texas becoming its own state. They probably thought he was trying to start a rebellion, even if that wasn’t his plan at the time. They were afraid he was encouraging Texans to go against the government.
