In 1821 William Becknell developed the trail, it served as a commercial highway that was vital, because there was no railroad at the time
The route crossed the north-western corner of Comancheria, the territory of the Comanches, who demanded pay for granting passage to the trail, and represented another market for American traders.
The Santa Fe Trail is 1,200 miles long and stretches through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado
