At first, I didn’t think I’d enjoy the book because I thought it was mainly gonna be about basketball, and sports which aren’t the types of books I go for. After reading more into it, I started to love the style, idea and message behind the book. It showed me how life can be tough, and how being enrolled and passionate about a sport and team can mean a lot to someone. It talks about a team, family, friends, and many more things a teenager can relate to! I could really understand what it was trying to portray, not only was this about a group of friends, couples and family members, but it also shows values, family “principles” and morals, the meaning of mistakes, and learning to accept yourself. It shows how black people get treated, the things they have to go through and face over the color of their skin. It shows racism, the struggles and obstacles Starr goes through. At a young age she had to learn the discrimination that came with the police and society. She was a very lively, passionate, bright and full of life person. Her music and legacy still lives on to this day, I read her book when I first began to listen to her music and learned what really happened to her. Despite being young, she has gone through a lot of trauma such as verbal, sexual, emotional and physical abuse. That abuse comes from her father, leaving her pregnant at 12 years old. Her whole life, she’s suffering with it all on her own, her mother is not fit to support her or be there, so she seeks help from a teacher, whom listens to her, and helps her with her poetry that is a passion of Precious.
