I went to a pretty small school that was in the smaller community of Canal Fulton. I remember doing some different projects in school both for academics and extracurriculars that involved the community. For example, when we would talk about canal systems, we had many examples and discussions about the canals in the community. Having that connection with the community made learning about the information more interesting for me. I was not only learning about these things in school, but I could see it in the community where I live.

I think place-based education is a positive educational opportunity for students. It allows them to actually see what they are talking about in schools. Often times, I feel that in school many things are discussed, but there is never an actual connection made to the students. Having place-based learning solves this problem and allows students to physically see what is being taught in school. I also think it is positive because it allows the students to feel more like a part of the community they live in. I think the sense of community is essential in a classroom setting, and it is essential out in the real world.

The notion of place-based learning makes me wonder how often it is actually used in the classroom. I feel like there is much time dedicated to reading and math, especially in an early childhood setting. Does this make it difficult to have place-based education in these grades? I hope that it does not, but knowing how schools are allocating time for these two subjects, does it hinder the ability to do other, project-based approaches such as place-based learning?

I feel like so often students don't understand how what they are learning connects to life outside of school, and what this format of education does is directly connect the world around the students to the classroom. It shows how what they are learning as students connects to their participation in the community around them. I love it when community is brought into the classroom, showing a sense of pride in the land we live in and the people around us. This is a huge connection point for me.

One of the teachers said something I really resonated with, that the students get to become “stewards of the land that they live in”. Our students get a chance to see how their impact on the community around them is affected by the things that they are learning. They get to see themselves in the history of the world around them, and become active participants in the movement of society. I love the opportunities that this format of learning provides on both an educational standpoint and also a social-emotional standpoint. Students gain a better appreciation for their community, which is such a positive aspect of this format.
