This camp is being hosted by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's School of Earth, Society, and Environment. It will be held August 12th and 13th at the UIUC Natural History Building on campus. This camp is free to attend! For students who attend Franklin STEAM Academy, there will be buses available to and from UIUC for student transport, supervised by camp counselors. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks will be provided both days. Students will be learning about the Geosciences through the context of a Mars Expedition. They will be guided by UIUC Geosciences graduate students, learning about Geography, Geology, Atmospheric Sciences, and Environmental Sciences, and have the opportunity to talk to Mars ROVER NASA Geoscientists via video chat. There is a maximum capacity of 30 students, after which we will close the camp registration. So please fill out the forms ASAP! All camp registration forms are due by July 26th!

Students are also invited to participate in an online study, held by Julia Cisneros and Aida Guhlincozzi. This study looks at the knowledge and interest levels of middle school girls in the Geosciences. Your student can participate in the study as well as the camp, but they are free to not participate in the study and only the camp, or the study and not the camp, or other opportunities. Surveys are no more than 45 minutes long, and available to take online. Parent consent will need to be obtained through the online form before the student participates. These surveys will ask some basic questions about your child, their interests and knowledge in the Geosciences, and their background in the Geosciences. You and your child may withdraw at any time, and any information gathered will be destroyed. If you would like more information, please read the consent form with more information about the study, the methods, and what your child will be doing.
