One intriguing character interaction of Act 2 is the one between Rose and Troy because in scene 3 after Troy brings home Raynell, Rose tells Troy, "From right now...this child got a mother. But you a woman less man."(pg.79). Rose is agreeing to take care of Troy's baby but refuses to be his woman. In contrast, after Troy's funeral, Rose admits how she feels about Troy when she is talking to Cory and tells him that Troy "Meant to do more good than he meant to do harm."(pg.97). Even though she spent years filled with disdain for Troy and his actions, it is only after he is gone that she admits how pivotal he was in her life.

Theme

One theme present in Act 2 is the theme of fences or barriers. This theme is very apparent in scene 4 with Troy and Cory. Following the brawl the two have in the yard, Troy eventually wins and tells Cory to leave his house. Cory states that he will be back for his belongings and in reply Troy says, "They'll be on the other side of that fence."(pg.89) and that is the last thing Troy ever says to his son. By stating that Cory's belongings are outside Troy's fence, it is a clear representation of the barrier now in place between Troy and Cory which resulted in Cory's disappearance from Troy's life.

One important conflict in Act 2 is Man vs. Family which is demonstrated by Troy's actions with Cory. When Cory comes back from his graduation, he is trying to pass his father on the steps which starts an argument. Cory then tells Troy he doesn't "Count around here no more"(pg.85) because Cory feels that Troy has disrespected his mother by his actions. Afterwards the two begin to brawl and it culminates in Troy kicking Cory out of the house and Cory does not return until the eventual death of his father
