The Raja Ampat archipelago is almost right in the center of the Coral Triangle, which contains at least 500 species of reef-building corals in each ecoregion. The Raja Ampat archipelago also encompasses 15,000 square miles of land and sea off the northwestern tip of the Indonesia province of Papua. Most fishers decide to go to extreme tactics such as dynamite & poison fishing which affect the reefs. There is also the targeting of vulnerable and endangered species including turtles, sharks, crocodiles, groupers and Napoleon wrasse. They plan will combine no-take zones with traditional use areas to create a management scheme that will allow local people to pursue traditional livelihoods while also allowing for the recovery of fish stocks.
