Time constraints, learning anxiety, and accessibility needs are common themes. Therefore, instructional design must prioritize flexibility, relevance, and learner support from day one.

In my classroom, I aim to establish belonging from day one through shared storytelling, learner-led activities, and co-constructed expectations. Activities like learning autobiographies and identity reflections invite students to bring their full selves into the learning space. Additionally, low-stakes assessments and community-building rituals reduce anxiety and foster trust.

As Allen et al. (2022) notes, fostering belonging involves intentional choices around inclusivity, validation, and flexibility. Acknowledging and valuing students’ lived experiences is not just supportive, it’s essential to transformative learning.
