The video focuses on how a single story can shape the way a person perceives an individual or any given situation. the author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie goes on to give a few examples of her experience with single stories.

Her first encouter with a single story was when she was young and being a person who like to read, most of the books she was exposed to where written by British authors and she noticed all the chracters in the books were all described the same way. so herr being younger reader assumed all books were fashioned as like British books. she goes on to say that it was not only until books written by Caribbean authors became available tht she was able to understand that peoplewho were similiar to her likeness were written in books as well.

Another example she gave was when she first met her roommte at college, due to one simple story her roommate thought she liistened to Tribal music and thought she spoke another language, not aware that her country, Nigeria's native language was English nad like most people and she listended to similir music to Americans.

The danger of a single story also existed in the Caribbean amongst the White Slave Owners and the African Slaves, simply because the slaves were seen only as property to be bought, sold and worked to their graves, and not as people who were human beings, with dignity or respect or even as skilled labourers, instead they were, whipped, starved, haunted if they tried to escape from the plantations and brutaly killed.

I think single stories affect everyone in some way but its up to us to not let it interfere with our perception but encourage us to do our own research and to look at someone else's point of view related to that situation. People often say the phrase " there are two sides to a story", probably because they are aware of the dangers of a single story.

October 23th, 2017

Education today in the Caribbean is seen as a main priority, this comprises of Primary, Secondary and Tertiary education. In Caribben History, education wasn't available to everyone as it is now, it was available to a selected group of individuals such as, the white males perferably. Africans won't given the opportunity to have an education or to be able to attend school and there was also the same sterotyping with the whites, where women belong at home taking care of the household, looking after the children, cooking and cleaning, while the men go out to work and bring in the income. They were incharge of holding down the household finacially.

Today everyone has the right to an Education whether they are poor, rich, old or young. Over the years Education has become so important, that the Government has made Education available to accommodate, working class people or any person who may not have the time to attend school, therefore they have provided online classes for those persons to attend. Education in the Caribbean over the years has been structured in some cases to prepare persons to study abroad and to gain some kind of economic and political leadership.

in Trinidad and Tobago, we've been blessed with numerous educational institutions to attend within our community and country, however only a few Universities such as the University of the Southern Caribbean, the University of Trinidad and Tobago, which has numerous campuses located around Trinidad and the University of the West Indies, which might I say is the most popular one seeing that there are campuses located around the Caribbean, in particular the Trinidad campus.

The Government in Trinidad and Tobago came up with a way to make sure that everyone in the country is given a chance to an education by creating a programme to assist persons financially who deccide to further their education at Tertiary level, called GATE. ( Government Assistance for Tuition Expenses)

Novemeber 12th,201

CARICOM was introduced by the Treaty of Chaguaramas in 1973, and in 2001 the Treaty of Chaguaramas was revised, establishing the Caribbean Community and the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME). It includes fifteen (15) member states such as Montserrat, Haiti, St Lucia, Guyana, Suriname, Antigua &Barbuda, Dominica, Jamaica, St Vincent and the Grenadines, St Kitts & Nevis, Grenada, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago and Belize.

The CSME main objective is to promote social, political and economic integration, also to share policies and benefits equally amongst eachother. The CSME encourage the free movement of goods and services, free movement of capital such as foreign exchange and the right to establish businesses in any of the CARICOM member states.

Benefits of CARICOM Single Market and Economy are the increase of opportunies for employment within any member states, the movement of goods throughout other member states, the removing of tariffs barriers and the free movement of labour which promotes and invest in the education and health care system. CARICOM plays an important role in case of emergency events, through an organisation called Community Based Diaster Risk Management Agency (CDEMA). Where there's a change in the environment, for example, a natural diaster, the member states would be able to help with their social and economic needs.
November 20th, 2017

With my experience doing Caribbean History, i was easily able to relate to the lessons in Caribbean Civilisation. Being someone who enjoys learning about the history of the Caribbean whether it be by reading books or by watching documentries and movies ( i am kunta kinte, roots 2016), it also helped me to learn and understand throughout the course.

At first, now being introduced to the course I wasn't too happy with the idea of online lectures mostly because I've never had to use it before and because I enjoy face to face communication, I also thought by doing the online lectures it would of been harder to understand and learn. After having a few difficulties in using the "blackboard colaborate" connecting to the lecture, I must say I did enjoy Dr.Campbell's lecture and i did find it very imformative as the weeks went by.

Also the learning techniques like using powerpoints and givng students the ability to answer and ask questions, when they didn't understand a topic, contributed sigificantly to making the lectures interesting. In Addition, the tutorials that came right after the lectures, which meant that you had to watch and understand what was discussed in the lectures in order, to be able to answer any group questions, given the following day.

Apart from the lectures each week, I really enjoyed the the book given to us for our book report simply because it wasn't too long and some may say it related to alot of people being teenagers and some issues we are faced with growing up and also how the book connected to what we would discuss in Caribbean Civilisation. For someone who never experienced writing a book report before I found it to be a little difficult at first but with the proper guidelines, I manage to get it completed.

I think having Caribbean Civilisation as a foundation course, is a good idea because it gives students a chance to gain more knowledge about the history within the Caribbean. What am able to take away from this course, is that their is no such thing as being more civilzed. Simply because being civilzed is based on your own values and what you, as an individual used to jugde others based on. Lastly, I've learnt thatthere isn't any 'pre history' there's just 'history'.
November 25th, 2017
