On December 25th, 1991, The Soviet flag went down for a final time, replaced by the modern Russian flag. During this time, the people of Russia wanted Russia to transform into a more western country. There were many hopes of the two great superpowers, the US and the former Soviet Union cooperating, and improving their relations. During that time, Pro-US sentiments were high. At this time, Russia was undergoing serious issues. It had a crisis, in which it suffered economically, politically, and socially. During this time, it was not clear if Russia as a country would survive, causing it to lose it's once powerful status and lose its title of "Global Superpower" This caused the US to think that they could induct other members of the Warsaw pact into NATO,  leading them to adding the Czech republic, Hungary, and Poland in 1999. This broke the promise Mikhail Gorbachev made to not allow any member of the Warsaw pact join NATO. Some allegations include Ukraine being lead by fascists, claims that the Ukrainian army had committed multiple atrocities, and blaming the crash of a Malaysian aircraft on Ukraine, when it was shot down by a Russian missile.
