Jehovah’s Witness

Students enter the classroom settings with a variety of religious beliefs including Jehovah’s Witnesses. These students are similar to others in that they request respect of beliefs and modifications in lessons when needed. They chose not to celebrate holidays (Easter, Halloween, or Christmas) or birthday celebrations and take an apolitical position. Jehovah’s Witnesses do not accept blood transfusions and educators should note it in case of an emergency. Educators should aim to modify classroom activities or provide proper accommodations in order to create an inclusive environment that respects these students and their beliefs.

Alter holiday activities for the entire class - for example instead of having students create ghosts for Halloween broaden the topic to autumn and create leaves.

Create a hand signal between the teacher and the student for situations that make the student feel uncomfortable.

Speak to the parents and student to understand and record specific accommodations. Jehovah Witness families vary in what they allow their child to do and not do.

The most valuable resource will be the parents of the student. It is important from the beginning to have an open and continuous dialogue about accommodations. Every Jehovah’s Witness family varies in how they interpret their religion.

Jehovah’s Witnesses offer a brochure with information about why they do not celebrate holidays or participate in certain activities. This can be helpful to gain a deeper understanding. Please note that it speaks about education, it is not a form of trying to convert anyone.

Parents should be aware that their child cannot be discriminated by the school or district because of religious affiliation. The U.S. department of Education offers civil rights laws that protect all students of religious identity.

Teachers Pay Teachers offers an alternative booklet specifically for Jehovah’s Witnesses. If parents do not want to offer a brochure that is affiliated to their congregation or provided it as a additional guide, the option is available. This can be offered to teachers and curious parents to help expand the communities knowledge about Jehovah’s Witnesses.
