“I’d spent so much time in Welch trying to make things a little bit better, but nothing had worked.”
The parents and the kids live in two separate worlds. The parents live in this fantasy world where they are the center. Rec thinks he is going to make it as this brilliant inventor and Rose Mary thinks she is an amazing artist with no obligations but to make art. Meanwhile the kids are out in the real world where all they see are two parents not willing to take care of their children. The kids are forces to fend for them selves and eventually for their parents. The quote is from when they lived in a shack in Welch. Jeannette decided that sense they would be there for a while she would paint the house to make it a little more like home but no one would help her to do the task.
