The Salem witch trials started in 1692 when a group of young girls claimed that they were possessed by the devil. They started accusing women in Salem of being witches and the town soon after set up a trial. The accused women would go up on the stand and either deny that they were witches, which led to being killed. Or just say that they were witches in order to survive, because those who confessed could apparently be saved.

The people of Salem eventually turned on the girls because they started to accuse high standing people of being witches. The trials finally ended when the girls accused the wife of the governor of Massachusetts. Due to these trials, many women were either killed or locked in jail. Salem became a deserted ghost town. The trials were later said to be unlawful because of the use of spectral evidence.

Calvinism was a theology created by John Calvin in the sixteenth century. Many ideas were taken from Calvinism and were incorporated into the puritans way of thinking. They shared many similar beliefs such as depravity and atonement. These beliefs are what helped lead to the witch trials. For lack of more advanced knowledge, the puritans thought the witches were possessed by satan. Because of their beliefs, this was totally a possibility to them.
