Organism: Fennec Fox

ADAPTATION FOR DESIGN: The fox's ears are nearly half the size of its body, but offer dissipation of heat through blood vessels near the large surface as well as enhanced hearing. The thick fur provides insolation for the cold dessert nights, and is also found on the pads of their feet to provide protection from hot sand and act as a "snowshoe" to allow easier travel.

Human Problem & Research

In the fall, the mornings and evenings can be quite chilly, but the afternoon heat is simply sweltering. It is difficult to know what clothes to wear for a day spent outdoors. Humans sweat to cool themselves when overheated, evaporating the water from their bodies. We get "goosebumps" -- our hair on our bodies lay flat to keep in heat -- and shiver to keep warm when are cold. However, the amount of hair on our bodies is not enough to keep us warm in colder climates, unlike the fox's thick fur, and sweating can only release so much heat before we become dehydrated. By utilizing the versatility of the Fennec's ears, one can be prepared for the change in temperature. Humans also have a limited hearing range: animals like elephants can detect much lower frequencies, and animals like the Fennec fox can detect higher ones. The fox is also able to detect much quieter sounds than a human can, listening to bugs that are crawling underground! Wearing the ears will allow an experience of above-average hearing.

The ears of the fox have a large amount of blood vessels near the surface to help release heat from the body. The ears are covered in long white or cream fur to both reflect heat, and to insulate the animal after the sun sets. The large ears also are sensitive to sound, which allows them to hear potential food that might be underground.

I changed the design so that the ears were more connected to the body to allow for a better transfer of heat through the ears. The ears are also taller. Fur would be made of cotton balls to mimic fur.

In the final design, I created ears that are able to be worn down to incorporate the insolation effect. This is more comfortable for the wearer, and makes use of more of the adaptations. Headphones are still included, and string is used to keep the ears together. Construction paper and paper plates were used for support, and the ears sit on top of the wearer's actual ears.
