Non-conformity

"I swear honey, there are times when I think you're the only one around who still has faith in me," Dad said. "I don't know what I'd do if you ever lost it." I told him that I would never lose faith in him. And I promised myself I never would.

I chose this quote because it shows how Jeanette does not want to conform to the thoughts everyone else has about her father. No one else has faith in him except her. This picture represents someone straying from the norm, and doing something different than the rest of the crowd.

Chaos and Order

"That was the thing about the hospital. You never had to worry about running out of stuff like food or ice or even chewing gum. I would have been happy staying in that hospital forever."

I chose this quote because in the midst of chaos in being at the hospital, which normally has a negative connotation carried with it, Jeanette is happy there because she finds even a small amount of order there, in her extremely chaotic life. The picture of the boat shows a storm all around, but behind is the calm in the middle of the storm, a sunny peaceful sunset.

Self-Sufficiency

"But Mom," I said, "that ring could get us a lot of food."
"That's true," Mom said, "but it could also improve my self-esteem. And at times like these, self-esteem is even more vital than food."

I chose this quote because it illustrates how much Jeanette had to rely on herself, provide for herself, and meet her own needs. No one else was going to do it for her, so she had to be self-sufficient. I chose this picture of this boy combing his own hair at a young age, because most young kids need their parents to do almost everything for them, and they rely on them greatly. Jeanette was unable to rely on her parents like most kids, so she had to be extremely self-sufficient.

Fantasy vs Reality

"We laughed about all the kids who believed in the Santa myth and got nothing for Christmas but a bunch of cheap plastic toys."
"Years from now, when all the junk they got is broken and long forgotten," Dad said, "You'll still have your stars."

I chose this quote because it talks about the fantasy character of Santa. He doesn't exist in reality, and all he supposedly gives is cheap toys that don't last forever. Rex is trying to show Jeanette that while they have their fantasy, it's not actually real or true. But he tells her that Jeanette will always have her stars to look at, because they will always exist in reality. This picture of stars shows Jeanette reality, stars, which is a major part of her life.

Forgiveness

"Don't worry, God understands," Mom said. "He knows that your father is a cross he must bear."

I chose this quote because Rose Mary demonstrates forgiveness by talking about Jesus. Saying Jesus forgives all and understands that Rex is going to mess up time and time again, is a great way to showcase forgiveness to your children. It encourages the child to think that if Jesus forgives then they should too. I chose the picture of Jesus carrying the cross because it shows that He went to whatever length necessary to forgive, so we should do the same in our lives.

Unconditional Love

"Dad kept telling me he loved me, that he would have never let me drown, but you can't cling to the side your whole life, that one lesson every parent needs to teach a child is, "If you don't want to sink, you better figure out how to swim."

I chose this quote because it tells us that no matter how dysfunctional a parent he may have been, Rex still loved his children. And his children really believed he loved them unconditionally, despite their uncomfortable situations. I chose this picture of a father and daughter, because it puts on display the unconditional love the father has for her, and vice versa.
