Scientist could use a scale to study and measure how fast the water rises in  a certain amount of time during the flood. The effect of a flash flood on a farmers  cornfield would be that the crops would be damaged and his business would also be damaged because of that.  If lava flows into the ocean the chemicals inside of it might mix with the water and it might kill some sea life, and also the heat coming from the lava might be too strong for the sea life to resist so they could get injured or burned.
