1. Mae C. Jemison was probably expected to become a housewife, but she studied and worked hard to become an astronaut. She faced challenges because of fascism and discrimination, but she overcame them and lived her dream. It was very hard for her, and she must have felt very discouraged sometimes, but she persevered.
2. My dad doesn’t care whether I follow in his footsteps or not, he just wants me to be happy in whatever job I choose. My mom, however, wants me to go to Harvard and get a job in STEM. She recently got the idea from another mom that if I wanted to go into the arts field, she would not support me. Unfortunately for me, that’s what I want to do, so dealing with this mess won’t be fun. I don’t believe parents should put pressure on their children to pick a certain kind of job because parents should want their kids to be happy and forcing their dreams on their kids isn’t the way to do that.

1.	“All one can really leave one’s children is what’s inside their heads. Education, in other words, and not earthly possessions, is the ultimate legacy, the only thing that cannot be taken away.” Attributed to Dr. Wernher von Braun, this quote asserts that education is the most valuable thing one can give a child. While material things can break or be taken away, knowledge is more helpful and cannot be taken. An education can also be the beginning for someone to create a new invention or write an amazing book. For Sonny, an education could be the beginning of a passion for space and rockets. This quote thematically suggests that getting an education is an important part of Sonny’s journey and that it inspires him to do what he does now.

“All I’ve done is give you a book. You have to have the courage to learn what’s inside it.” First uttered by Miss Freida Joy Riley, this quote states that one cannot be led through the process of learning and discovering. That must be done that by oneself if one is to learn. It also means that if one truly wants to learn, one must have the courage to educate oneself rather than being forced to learn by a teacher. This quote suggests the theme of independence and courage.

2. Map of Coalwood:

Sonny feels that family means tough love. He is used to being overlooked and ignored in favor of his older brother. One example is when Sonny “[knows] Dad thought about Jim all the time, was always telling people what a great football player my brother was, and how he was going to tear up the world in football when he went to college” (pg 43). This hurts Sonny’s feelings because he wants to please his father as well and doesn’t like being overlooked because he doesn’t currently have a talent. It hurts him even more when he starts building rockets and his father doesn’t like it. This causes him to go to Mr. Bykovski behind his father’s back to try and prove himself. Sonny feels proud when Mr. Bykovski tells him to “‘[m]ake these fly. Show your dad what you and I did together.’ [His] father had clearly ... told [him] to stop building rockets ... [He] stood straight and tall, and said firmly ... ‘Yes, sir. You can count on me’” (pg 97). This demonstrates that he wants to please his father and get his father’s approval and affection.
