If the wound is miner it can be left open to the air to heal.

If not cover the wound with occlusive or semi-occlusive bandages.

Clean with cool running water and dry with a sterile cloth.

Application of antibiotic ointment is next.

For small lacerations a bandage with daily renewal is acceptable.

With deeper laceration stitches are necessary.

if small enough simple bandages will work.

Serious lacerations will require a visit to the doctor for suturing.

Minor puncture wounds can be treated at home, but it's very important that all the debris is removed from the wound succeeding the removal of the penetrating object.

Severe punctures should be treated by a doctor.

Cleansing of the wound with antibiotics.

Covered with bandage.

Most avulsions will require medical care from a doctor

To reattach the torn tissue, the avulsed tissue should be placed in a moist preferably saturated with saline solution.

Skin grafting surgery is a possible and common treatment for this wound.

Preparing the Athlete

All open wounds and lesions should be covered with dressings that do not allow for transmission to or from the athlete like occlusive dressing.

When bleeding does occur, athletes must be removed from participation and returned only when deemed fit and safe by the medical staff.
