Step 3 of the purification process stood out to me the most as even though after step 2, the water extremely pure, the government wants make sure that our water is not contaminated and it shows that our safety is their utmost priority

There is nothing else I would like to find out as NEWater is something that is highly talked about so I would say that I already knew a great amount of info about NEWater even before going on the learning journey.

I learnt about the processes that used water goes through to be treated so that it can be of safe and high quality for us to use. Unlike before I did not know that NEWater had a 'Stage 3 - Ultraviolet Disinfection' as after reverse osmosis the water is already of high quality hence I did not think there was another need for another process but I found out that the third stage is to remove any last traces of bacteria and viruses

I felt that this learning journey is a good experience for us as it is important to know about the importance of water and how our amount of water is limited due to land scarcity. NEWater helps to treat used water to clean and drinkable water, making it one of Singapore's pillar of water sustainability

I learnt that Singapore is one of the top 5% countries that is scarce in water . Which is why Singapore is inventing new ways to invent clean fresh water for Singaporeans instead of solely relying on the water imported from Malaysia . I also learnt the steps on how to obtain / make NEWater . Those steps being

No 1. Microfiltraion (removing larger contaminants)

-The filter used to filtrate the larger contaminants is 3 microns

No.2 Reverse osmosis ( the main technology used)

-reverse osmosis uses high pressure to force water through a semi permeable membrane which is 100x smaller than the filter used in step 1 . Microfiltration .

If we were to zoom in the smaller contaminants by 1milx , bacteria would be the size of the bus , a virus the size of a truck , dissolved minerals the size of a soccer ball and water molecules the size of a ping-pong ball . In comparison to the holes in the semi permeable filter which is only the size of a tennis ball . Allowing only the water molecules to pass through.

Step. 3 . Ultraviolet disinfection(a safety backup)

-just in case the semi permeable filter did not work (Highly highly unlikely) . UV lamps are housed in quartz tubes to keep the lamp from contact withe after . Even though the temp of the lamp is around 800°C , there is a protective cover that ensures that the area in contact with the water is only at 60°C to ensure the water does not evaporate . It also only stays in this special housing for one second just in case .

Step 4. Add ?? To balance out the PH level . I was not able to hear what the instructor said on what was added . Sorry

In the end we will get NEWater . Woohoo!

I also learnt some fun facts about water written on the walls at the end of the tour . Eg. Water bears a more complex character than it's life supporting function - not only got basic needs but for livelihood . / 70% of the worlds surface is covered by water but less than 1% of the world's fresh water is available for human use

In the end , my perspective on how important water is has become more complex as I know know more reasons on why water is so important and how less fresh waters availability is to humans

The thing that stood out the most was the steps to making NEWater . This is because the technology used feels very advanced even though it's been used for a long time . It has a sense of futurism that I like . In the future I'll be sure to tell my neighbours , family and friends about how important water is and how scarce it is . I'll also tell them about how NEWater is made to show them what I learnt . Overall this learning journey is very educational and fun
