In this conference, we will examine music that has defied, reaffirmed, and/or blurred the boundaries of genre in experimental music of the past 50 years. We seek to ask who and what gets included and excluded when genre lines are drawn.

The conference will feature talks and performances centered on the music of our guest artists, including composer-clarinetist James Falzone, composer Sarah Kirkland Snider, and trumpeter-composer Wadada Leo Smith, who will give the conference keynote.

In celebration of our 10th anniversary and the Walt Whitman bicentennial in 2019, we are announcing our first ever call for scores from which selections will be performed as part of our final concert of the season on June 18, 2019 at The National Opera Center in New York City.

- Open to composers of any age, gender, ethnicity, and country of residence.
- Settings of texts by Whitman.
- Solo voice and piano only.
- Between 3-5 minutes.
- Must be willing to transpose song if necessary.
- Can submit up to 2 songs.
