Rei's designs have forever shifted fashion design and the way consumers think and look at clothing. Her relation of body and dress is a completely new idea and she prides herself on bringing newer and fresher concepts to the design world. She iconically hates journalists and reporters, has dated Yohji Yamamoto, another insanely talented Japanese fashion designer, and calls herself a businesswoman first- she proprieted Commes des Garcons and Dover Street Market.

Kawakubo’s clothes started out very consumer focused, and for an early period was influenced by western designers, but over time her clothes began to be described as an out-and-out assault on the idea of fashion itself. Kawakubo was also very opposed to the idea of mechanized perfection, often loosening screws on machines here and there so they “can’t do exactly as they’re supposed to do”.

In 2004 Comme des Garçons’ guerrilla style stores or pop ups helped introduce the CDG brand to global audiences - CDG is often credited with originating the pop up trend. Kawakubo initially worked in advertising at Asahi Kasei, a chemical company, and got in to fashion via her work promoting acrylics to the average consumer through their use in textiles.

personally my favorite thing i learned about rei is that she is always trying for 'new' rather than the 'best' which is something id like to incorporate into my own process and way of thinking! i think it's really cool to look for new rather than anything else; what is new now can always be newer tomorrow... and may lead to more than if you are simply looking for good.
