Brexit has massively impacted the Travel and Tourism Industry by UK tourists not being able to EU-fast track passport control and customer lanes and immigration procedures will take longer as the UK passport holders require a stamp on their passport on arrival into the EU. They are also getting UK passport holders as they now require a visa to work within the EU, so tour operators are employing more EU-based staff as resort reps. The UK are also not able to bring duty free alcohol and tobacco back into the UK from the EU destination. From 2023 British Visitors will need to register online and pay in advance for 'Etias' Visa (approximately £7 for 3 years permit).

In the future, i think this could impact holidays by making them more expensive for people to book. If going outside the UK you also have to wait in long ques and pay for mobile roaming, to use and go abroad. However people in the UK may choose to go on a staycation to save on money but bad because other countries rely on profit from tourists.

Fuel prices rising is impacting the Travel and Tourism industry by putting people of travelling as fuel and petrol is rising significantly which means it will be more and more expensive and all prices are going up with food and drinks also meaning that people cant afford basic items. Energy bills is rising by more than double which is currently impacting businesses and homes, within the UK, meaning people will have less disposable income.

People are not going to want to book holidays as people will wanted to take care of their needs and not want to book due to them having to pay for their bills instead of paying for a holiday meaning we may see a rise is holiday destinations but however this may not be true as the fuel prices are rising. Inbound tourism could benefit the Uk as people from outside the UK may see it as a more sustainable place to spend money meaning the UK will gain profit from this.

Social Factors

There are many social factors that are contributing to the Travel and Tourism industry where organisations are having to adapt their products and services.

Packaged holidays have been around since the 1950's and became popular in the 1960's onwards. However, in more recent years although package holidays have remained popular there has been a decrease. One of the reasons for this is that tourists want to do something different as most people have been on a package holiday. Although package holidays have remained popular, it is reported that booking of package holidays have decreased by 14% in four years.

In recent years, city breaks have become popular due to people wanting to take short breaks, various times throughout the year. Tourists are also wanting to go on holidays that are to do with their interests, these are called Specialist holidays. Examples of specialist tourism includes Dark tourism where people visit places of death and disaster, wellbeing holidays and safari holidays.

Another social factor is that the older generation are living longer. These type of customers are called the grey market. They are living longer due to better healthcare therefore, feeling well enough to go on holiday. SAGA is an example of a tour operator that caters for the over 50's. The older generation also have more disposable income due to not having dependents, savings and they may have paid off their mortgages. This means that they are willing to spend more on holidays.

Thanks to the development of the internet, 80% of people are booking holidays online due to convivence. Travel and Tourism companies are now investing in their online services making it easier for people to make payments and make travel arrangements. However. this has had a negative impact on travel agents on the high street due to less customers, travel agents are closing down. However, if travel agents are to continue to close down in the future, this could negatively impact the older generation who rely on high street travel agents to make their travel arrangements.

However, a positive impact that technology is having is that in 2024 3D baggage scanners are due to be introduced, which will be able to accurately detect contents of a passengers bag without them needing to remove liquids and electronics. If these were to be introduced it would be making airport security quicker meaning that tourists can spend more time looking around duty free, which is positive for airports as it's giving people more time to look and spend money around duty free.

Other technological developments include; customers now being able to order their food and drink at the table using a QR code. Airports are using facial recognition software on automated boarding gates, customers are now able to view rooms using 360 degree view. This increase guest satisfaction knowing that guests have picked a room they are happy with before visiting.

The environment has impacted the travel and tourism industry massively as its put massive amount of pressure on the airline industry because its reduces its reliance on fossil fuels like kerosene and produce greener, renewable fuels to hit 'net zero' as this targets have been set by ICAO. Airlines are using more fuel efficient planes on long-haul routes that are smaller but can fly further. Therefore this is helping on improving the travel organisations to become more environmentally friendly/responsible as most companies have a sustainability policy or strategy. Tourists are also more likely to be environmentally aware and will choose to book with companies that are playing their part in reducing their impact on the environment.

The law and regulations affect the travel and tourism industry as in the UK, travel companies that plan and sell overseas holidays to UK customers need to have an ATOL license. Data protection regulations require businesses to store customer information securely and for a limited period of time and will face huge fines if they do not comply. Travel companies have to comply with the laws in each country they operate as some countries have stricter rules than others regarding health and safety requirements. They will need to follow the employment rights and customer protection as this is their rules.

Companies who purchase soft drinks that contain sugar will now need to pay a sugar tax meaning that businesses will be selling soft drinks for more as they need to make a profit.
