My expectations of the government in the upcoming future is the hope that there will be more respect for human life in general. There are many laws that are not necessary that restrict the lives of Americans that I think should be reconsidered to fit today's society. There are also huge prejudices against people of different races today. My expectations for this class is to develop a better understanding of what government and civics really ARE, such as what they consist of and what makes our government different from different forms of government around the world.

This audio post was really interesting, it told about both women's hardships and tribulations . In law school, one of the women was nicknamed "B*tch" in law school by her fellow men classmates. She said "better a b*tch than a mouse." I think it was really inspiring how both were appointed, one by a Republican, Reagan, and one by a democrat, Clinton. Clinton was not even interested in her at first, he heard she was a cold fish, but then was taken by her when he met her in person and hired her. Both were considered heroines for women everywhere. Because of them, lives of both men and women in America changed. They backed eachother up and stood up for women's rights.

My opinion on the video of actors reading the Declaration is that the video is harder to fully understand when it is spoken instead of reading it. It is hard to follow along because the actors may talk fast, and it is such a long document so you may get lost if you zone out for just a second. Reading it is easier in my opinion because you can reread what you didn't understand and go at your own pace.

My favorite part of the Declaration is when it says enemies in war, friends in peace. It shows how they are not afraid, and if there was a war they would be enemies. But, if everything happened peacefully, they would be friends.

I agree with opinion A, and I think that Johnson should be punished for his act of burning the flag. In my opinion, burning the American flag is not a freedom of speech, it is just an act of disrespect to not only our country but also to the people who have died for our country. The flag represents our strength through everything we have been through, and it is just a sign of immaturity and disgrace to burn it. In our class, the majority of people agreed with opinion A, and talked about how if they live in America they should respect the flag and the people who fight and fought for our country. Only a few people agreed with opinion B, and their reasons were mostly about how they didn't mean in in a harmful way, they just were practicing free speech and showing their opinions. The outcome of the case was that the Supreme Court invalidated the prohibitions on destroying the flag.

1. This movie was a story about how a state's Senator died, so Taylor had to pick someone new to represent. They picked Mr. Smith because he was viewed as a hero from boy rangers, and would be easy to manipulate because he doesn't know anything about laws, etc. Mr. Smith decided to create a national camp for boy rangers, but where he wanted it at was where Taylor and Paine were creating a dam to make money. They framed Mr. Smith like he owned the land and was going to keep all the money to get him kicked off Senate. Mr. Smith kept declaring his innocence until he passed out in court, and then Paine confessed to everything.
2. I think he was a Republican. He seemed to have come from a small town or a "country" state. Republicans usually like to keep national government out of their state's affairs, and prefer a more local and small government tailored to their needs. I think he might have changed to Democrat today, since the Republican party isn't for the "common man" anymore... And is more about the big businesses or the people who make a crazy amount of money. I think he would continue on in politics after staying strong, he got a lot of respect after standing up for what he believed in.
3. Someone from Illinois that I would compare Mr. Smith to is Rodney Davis. Mr. Smith portrays himself as just a regular guy from a small town in a state far away. He had never been to Washington DC, and kept talking about how he was a man who grew up in a small town, no different than anyone else. Rodney Davis seems really down to earth from when he came and talked at the school. He lives in Taylorville and has kids and is just a normal guy who goes to DC as well, which is what he portrays himself as.
