Collaboration

I am a true believer in the saying “ two brains are better than one.” I honestly do think people need collaboration in order to create greatness. No matter whether the other collaborator is being used just as a sounding board or as a true creative partner, having that added brainpower can be extremely beneficial for the product being created. When one person's weakness is the other person's strength and vice versa the partnership becomes unstoppable and the potential creation undoubtedly enhances to the next level. Within this class, I have had numerous amount of opportunities to practice collaboration. What is even more special is that they were in different subject realms, most of which I am not familiar with. This fact made the opportunity much more special since I was stepping out of my comfort zone. For example, when it came to the DESIGN workshop I had the opportunity to work with both Chantell and Julianna. We all had great ideas in which we all loved so as a group we collaborated to make all three ideas into one amazing design. We put our brains together to find connections between each one and let me just tell you it worked perfectly.

Aspirations & Goals

In the beginning of this semester, my main goal was to simply grow as an individual and artist and I am proud to say I achieved it. Not only in my dancing but also in my general understanding of art itself. I came in being a dancer only knowing about the art of dance. After taking this class, I am now able to say that I am a bit familiar with design, devising, playwriting, and directing. It has shifted my perspective on the preconceived notions I had prior. Because of this class, I now have new goals of incorporating all this new knowledge I gained into my choreography. I think it would be super cool if I could implement actual lines for each dancer within a piece sporadically. I would also love to incorporate lighting that highlights specific moments within the piece. In addition, I can give my dancers specific elements to embody for the way they approach their movement. Lastly, I would love to create a motif out of mapping the stage. Each element I would use has the intention of enhancing the story of the piece. The final projects made in each module helped me create this new goal of mine which I am very excited about.

Developing Ideas

Developing ideas is all about the spark of inspiration that sets a blaze of solid content. I believe once you get that sparkle of inspiration for a creation you are destined for greatness in that specific project. Inspiration fuels our ability to uniquely create no matter what obstacles are put in our path. If the inspiration is strong enough nothing will ever be too big of an obstacle, there will always be a way to get around it. Developing ideas was a constant element within all these modules. For example, within the devising section ideas had to be developed on the fly. The speed in which this was done was a great challenge for me. It helped me realize that ideas do not really have to be fully analyzed. Sometimes when you don't think so hard ideas flow much more easily. For example, in the mapping, we individually had to create poses and pathways that had a purpose. Although they were simple they still had to represent my personal experience. This exercise helped me create ideas in the moment without stress because in reality, I’ve learned there is no wrong or right when it comes to art.
