Chord progression - A series or pattern of chords. For example, C major / A minor / F major / G major is a very common pop song chord progression. CCCC  FFCC GFCC is an example of a 12-bar blues progression. 

1. Walking bass - When a bass (= low pitch) instrument such as a double bass, electric bass, piano left hand, trombone etc plays a pattern of notes that seem to “walk up” and then down in pitch, each note usually lasting 1 beat.

1. Call and response - Like a musical “question and answer.” Usually, one instrument/voice plays/sings a phrase, and another instrument or group of instruments plays back another phrase (or sometimes it can be a very similar phrase), like a conversation.

1. Dissonant harmonies - The opposite of “consonant harmonies” - when notes are played together that clash or create a combination of notes that isn’t exactly “pleasing.” Dissonance, when used intentionally, can be very expressive.

1. Syncopation - When the beats emphasized are not on the expected regular/symmetrical beats (“regular” beats are like a metronome).

1. Melisma - In singing, when one word is stretched out into multiple notes per syllable.

1. Flattened ‘blue’ notes - When notes are “bent” down in pitch to create a bluesy/jazzy effect.

1. Chromatic - When music uses not just the notes in a major/minor scale, but use the semitones between notes you would expect to hear.
