My mom had thyroid cancer and when she got it removed it spread further down since they didn't take out her whole thyroid, so were still in the process of getting rid of her cancer. She's had this for a while now, maybe 7 years. She's had it since I was in 3rd grade, it's pretty slow growing. She's been through multiple surgeries for it. We're currently holding off her next surgery until her other issues get fixed regarding her ovaries, she has a tumor on one which we don't know is cancerous or not but when she had surgery to get it removed they took out the wrong ovary.
