GIRFEC stands for “getting it right for every child.” This is a national framework in Scotland which aims to improve the health and wellbeing of children and young people. It aims to work with families, children, organisations and communities to make Scotland a good place to grow up in. Everyone within Scotland can work together to scaffold the support children and young people need to feel loved, safe, respected so that they are able to reach their full potential. In Scotland GIRFEC is often used to help adults ensure the learners are gaining the support in which they need so that they are able to progress in their learning within the classroom.

GIRFEC stands for ‘Getting it right for every child’ and is a commitment set out by the Scottish Government which sets out to provide all children, young people and their families with the right support at the right time. This is so thematic every child and young person in Scotland can reach their full potential.

GIRFEC sets out to promote the eight wellbeing indicators (SHANARRI) which describes how a child or young person is doing at a point of time and it proves that health and wellbeing is holistic. Practitioners and organisations should consider each of the eight wellbeing indicators in collaboration, with children, young people and their family.

GIRFEC also supports practitioners so that they will consider ways to improve the wellbeing for a child or young person through the National Practice Model. The National Practice Model sets out a shared framework and approach to identification, assessment and analysis of a child or young person’s wellbeing needs.
