The biggest reason for Ecuadorians are leaving Ecuador is that most Ecuadorian migrants are looking for work after the pandemic left them unemployed or cut off their main sources of income. Ecuador's Ministry of Labor reported more than 700,000 jobs were lost between March 2020 and March 2021, and just over half have been recovered.

Source: https://www.dallasnews.com/news/immigration/2021/08/13/a-heartbreaking-exodus-more-people-from-ecuador-feel-forced-to-migrate-to-the-us/

As you can see from this map, one of the states with a larger population of Ecuadorian than others is MN. Ecuadorians pick Minnesota for many reasons:
- Jobs, Minnesota has quality jobs that support Ecuadorian populations, and the job market is not as fierce as New York City
- Quality of Life
- Education, Ecuadorians are keen on education, and MN has a higher education system than most states in the United States.

Source: https://www.tcdailyplanet.net/state-ecuador-northeast/#:~:text=One%20reason%20many%20Ecuadorians%20left,is%20attracting%20Ecuadorians%20to%20Minnesota.

- Native people were farmers
- Conquered by Spaniards in 1534 and many were killed by disease
- Ecuador was passed between viceroyalties for the next 2 centuries until they gained independence as a part of Gran Columbia (also included Columbia and Venezuala)
- 1828-29, war with Peru over a border, Ecuador withdraws from Gran Columbia in 1830 and becomes the politically independent nation we know today.
- Ecuador split in 1859 and began a time of political unrest under a conservative president who made Roman Catholicism the state religion.
- This was followed by alternating periods of dictatorship, democratic government, economic success, and recession. Much instability politically and military coup's rule have not been uncommon in Ecuador's history.
- Peru invaded in 1941
- Military rule from 1963-1979 when democracy was restored
-Current day Ecuador remains democratic and the economy is growing although rather dependent on the oil industry.
Source: https://localhistories.org/a-brief-history-of-ecuador/

- Spanish is the primary language spoken in Ecuador. There are many resources for Spanish translation so teachers should make use of these with their Ecuadorian students.
- Be intentional specifically with key terms or terms that may be more abstract. Ex: aesthetic or metaphorical descriptors of music, agricultural terms/practices that are specific to the U.S.
- 80% of Ecuadorians are catholic and only 7% claim no religion at all. Keep this in mind and be sensitive to student's experience as the strong religious foundation/culture could lead to a bit of a culture shock in the increasingly secular U.S.
- There are several Ecuadorian restaurants in Minneapolis, particularly in Northeast.
- Resources for Spanish-speaking immigrants can be found here: https://mn.gov/mcla/community/resources/#:~:text=Amigos%20del%20Mercado%20provides%20one,life%20for%20immigrant%20Latino%20adults.https://mn.gov/mcla/community/resources/#:~:text=Amigos%20del%20Mercado%20provides%20one,life%20for%20immigrant%20Latino%20adults.https://mn.gov/mcla/community/resources/#:~:text=Amigos%20del%20Mercado%20provides%20one,life%20for%20immigrant%20Latino%20adults.
