The author is writing about the death of William at the beginning of chapter 9.I think this part's tones are the sadness and the depression. Moving to the chapter 10, I wasn't sure what word would fit this part of tone, to be honest. I thought this is close to scary feeling. In chapter 11, I think the author's tone is moving up to the good feeling. Keep writing about the bad thing from a different angle will bring the reader into the story. Writing about the good feeling after bad things is going to be a transition of the story.
