In the Sneetches there Status Symbol are the stars on the bellies. And at the start the ones with stars were considered better than the ones without stars. Or as the book calls it Sneetches. But in the Giver there Status Symbol is there eye color. Because in the Giver you are not supposed to point out these differences. It is considered an Utopia where everyone is equal.

The apple symbolizes Jonas's Utopia. Because everything in Jonas's Utopia is the same and boring color. Jonas has only seen shades his entire life but then the apple changed to a color he has never seen. So this might symbolize him living his life the same each and every day. And when he goes to the ceremony of twelve his entire life is going to change.

Some things the Utopia Jonas lives in forbids. Is nakedness because it is considered an uncomfortable category to talk about. They also forbid people falling in love the natural way. That's why they assign family units. Instead of it happening naturally.

The Receiver's house is different from everyone else's in the the community. Because it had nice and curved chairs which they did not have in their houses. He also has a surplus of books on their wall and everyone else just has the necessary books that they need. These differences exist to show you that the Receiver of Memory is a highly honored assignment. And that they need comfortable and peaceful rooms to work.

And Jonas learned sun, warmth, and sunshine from this memory. The last memory was kind of the same thing except it involved pain. And then Jonas learned what sunburn was.
