18 cupcakes to serve.

The fraction of the total cupcake for each person to eat is 2 1/4.

I know because there are two ways to figure this out. The first way is to do 18 divided by 8 which gives you 2.25. The second way is to do 2x8=16 so I know each person gets at least 2 then I divided the remaining 2 into 4 equal parts each. Then I gave 1/4 to each person.

Some problems are easier to solve than others because the easy ones are even numbers and the hard ones are odd numbers.

Mrs. Hazel has 12 children who would like cupcakes, but she only has 3. How is she going to share 3 cupcakes among 12 children? Mrs. Hazel can cut each cupcake into 4 pieces. Then, she gives 1/4 to each child. I know that each cupcake can be sliced into 4 pieces, so there would be 12 pieces. Each piece is equal to 1/4 of a cupcake. 
Some problems are easier to solve than others, because it can be easier if you have the same amount of cupcakes and children. If you have more children than cupcakes, it would be harder, because you would have to use fractions to solve the problem.
