Anxiety of male cuckoldry- During the Shakespearean era cuckoldry was something looked down upon and considered disrespectful towards the male if the female was caught being unfaithful.

Othello therefore has a clear insecurity of cuckoldry and extremely paranoid. Perhaps due to the fact he is considered 'an alien' to society by Ruth Cowhig, he doesn't want to be rejected by yet another person, especially the women he loves.

ALTERNATIVE- Even though according to Warnken Othello ‘is a soldier and therefore is accustomed to hardship and cruelty’ we see how jealousy builds up and his love for the “cunning whore of Venice” is not longer there. This idea frightens Othello, evoking insecurities, anger, and a “war-like Moore” which he wanted to hide. By evoking this clear emotion and allowing himself to [strike her] and [smother her] the stereotypes of a “war-like” “foul” Moore are becoming apparent stated by AC Bradley, that the jealousy provoked in Othello ‘converts human nature into chaos and liberates the beast in man.’ Therefore the male attitudes of women shift to negative actions as he insists he would “shred her to pieces.” “Shred”, again animalistic imagery is used for wild barbarous animals.

According to AC Bradley , the jealousy provoked in Othello ‘converts human nature into chaos and liberates the beast in man’ hence why he is no longer the "most gracious Duke" but is under the control of the "green-eyed monster"

The fact Othello is isolated by society because of his race and then due to Iago's manipulation of his relationship leads him to fall prey to his own obsession of destructive jealousy. Without Iago this jealousy would not have been allowed to grow - 'green eyed monster that doth mock'
