The popularity of the Wild west shows in the late 19th to early 20th century grew because of the dramatic reenactments of famous frontier events that kept crowds entertained, The performances usually involved real cowboys, "famous" figures such as Buffalo Bill, Annie Oakley and Native Americans. The portrayal of Native American cowboys and the romanticization of the frontier life attracted large audiences because the shows gave the Eastern and European audiences a glimpse into Western culture (except it was more exaggerated and fictionalized for nostalgia.) The Wild West shows celebrated American expansion and the countries frontier spirit, the shows portrayed as an essential part of American progress and moving forward at the time, the shows also gave job opportunity and helped keep culture alive.

Wild west shows were extremely popular in the 19th and 20th centuries. They were theatrical reenactments that included battles between cowboys and natives, famous events, and known western figures like buffalo bill. Buffalo bill was a famous wild west show that toured around the US forming huge crowds and was created by William Frederick “Buffalo Bill” Cody in 1883. There are many reasons that contributed to how these shows got so popularized. David J. These shows romanticized certain situations and gave society the chance to relive them without it actually happening. These shows had a nostalgic appeal to them because America started to become more modernized. Not only that, but the shows were also just flat out entertaining and brought everyone together. Famously known western figures also appeared in many of the shows such as Buffalo Bill Cody, Annie Oakley, and sitting bull. People were very interested to see these figures perform. These characters brought authenticity because they had a true western background. Overall, there are many reasons why the wild west shows were so popular.
