         <description><![CDATA[<div>Discrimination and poverty, however, posed numerous obstacles for the Africville population. Many facilities that ordinary Haligonians take for granted, such as sewage, clean water, and rubbish disposal, were withheld by the City of Halifax.&nbsp;<br>The Halifax Explosion of 1917 put an end to ambitions to transform Africville into an industrial zone. Much of Halifax's North End was destroyed, and Africville was devastated. A global relief effort raised millions of dollars for the city's reconstruction, however none of the funds were used to rebuild Africville.</div>]]></description>
