Some effects include:
  •  Paralysis: Based on degree of nerve damage, even the less severe types of spina bifida can lead to some amount of paralysis.
  • Mental Disabilities and Learning Difficulties: Not all individuals affected have some or all of these issues.
  •  Loss of Urine and Bowel Functions: These can occur with even mild cases of spina bifida.

Nobody is completely sure what causes spina bifida. Scientists say it is most likely due to a combination of inherited (genetic), environmental and nutritional factors.
There is some evidence that a low intake of plant proteins and folis acid could play a role in getting spina bifida.
Women who do not have enough folic acid during the pregnancy have a higher chance of giving birth to a baby with spina bifida. Nobody is sure how folic acid intake prevents spina bifida from developing.
