Even when kids are doing group work they're only thinking about their own grades. I would like to teach them how to work together and listen to each other effectively.

I am a firm believer that Joy is the most important component of any music education, so I hope to help students find joy in whatever music they are most passionate about.


My most influential music education experience  was actually from one of the professors here at NIU. Professor Reggie Thomas (who is a phenomenal jazz pianist and teacher) was doing a clinical with a high school jazz band that was visiting, and he was working with them on things I have never heard of before. The one thing that sticks out of my memory is “the bass  The drums are playing the same rhythmic line, so they should balance out to each other, reinforcing each other, not overwhelming the other“.
