As we already know, Judith Slaying Holofernes was made by Artemisia Gentileschi, a female artist who was raped by her mentor. This painting is thought to relate to that incident of sexual violence, in that it is likely that Gentileschi painted the apocryphal episode from the Bible where the Israeli hero Judith beheads the Assyrian general Holofernes as a visual representation of the violence she wished to inflict on her rapist.

The painting is a form of visual revenge, and chiarascuro is used here to draw attention to the brutal act depicted - I simply like how unflinchingly unapologetic the painter is about representing her feelings of rage towards her own disempowerment in a macabre way. I feel that she's entirely entitled and justified towards the feelings she experienced, and I find it amazing that she was able to create something so technically refined out of the horrors she underwent.
